Five swimmers and their coaches are working tirelessly to prepare for the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. They share the same goal, but their approach and their circumstances couldn't be more different. Their chances of winning lie in knocking a tenth, sometimes even a hundredth of a second off their time. Both success and failure in Rio could spell the end of their swimming career – but that is not important right now. Right now, there is nothing but the battle against themselves to improve.

0.03 seconds is a visual report of the cocoon that the swimmers and their coaches inhabit leading up to Rio and a search for what is going on in their heads and hearts.

“Schitterend zwemdrama”

Sharon van Rouwendaal and Ferry Weertman won Marathon swimming gold in Copacabana Bay. We filmed coach Marcel Wouda who went crazy during the thrilling photo finish at the beach. Our title 0,03 seconds seemed a well chosen one because even with a distance of ten kilometres the difference between winning and losing is only a fraction of a second. We have filmed a lot of great material over the last year and in the coming months Suzanne Raes and editor Elja de Lange will start to put this all together into a beautiful new film.

Since December 2015, Suzanne Raes and her crew (Jean Counet, Alex Booy, Wiro Felix and Victor Horstink) have followed the preparations of the dutch swimmers for the Olympic Games in Rio. Together with 2000 other film crews, they will follow the main characters during the biggest sport festival in the world.

Everything physically and mentally has been done to get the swimmers ready for a top presentation. Now the moment has come for all the hard work to become medals. That will not be easy as the competition is super strong and not all the swimmers are in top shape. It is very special to experience how strong the swimmers are and how small the difference is between winning and losing.
