Tracing Colombia is selected for IDFA DocLab Competition for Digital Storytelling 2025 !

This interactive film experience by Jan Rothuizen will be showcased from 14 till 22 november 2025 in the Doclab: VR Gallery at De Brakke Grond. Book your timeslot tickets via this link.

TRACING COLOMBIA

Tracing Colombia is an interactive film experience for laptop and smartphone. It follows visual artist Jan Rothuizen traveling to Colombia for an exhibition, shortly after the country signs a historic peace accord ending five decades of internal conflict. What begins as a professional trip evolves into a personal and emotional journey as he navigates a land in transformation-and confronts his own position as an outsider.

Struck by the vibrancy of the people and the urgency of the moment, the artist finds Colombians searching for new images and stories to define their identity beyond war.

Suzanne Raes has been nominated as a Director Factual for a BAFTA Scotland Award for her documentary Where Dragons Live!
The film was released in the UK and received rave reviews there including in The Guardian.

Where Dragons Live:

Harriet and her three older brothers experienced a magical childhood “among the dragons” at Cumnor Place, with enchanted gardens, fairy tales and nightmares. Now that they are adults and both their parents have died, brothers and sister are coming together to clear out the family home so it can be sold. In clearing out the bulging attics and overcrowded rooms, they try to relate to their demanding and eccentric parents and their unorthodox upbringing.

Where Dragons Live is a production by Docmakers in co-production with Bombito Productions & NTR, with support from the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, NPO Fund, Screen Scotland.

When we consider our circles of influence and circles of concern, wherever we are on the earth, we have here a film that brings the land struggle home to the Netherlands, showing us that as much as you may have empathy for worlds other than yours, there are also struggles on one's own doorstep that are urgent. This film is testament to the patience and endurance of filmmakers allowing themselves to be taken by the craft, to compassionately observe seasons passing, to attest to a moment where capitalism and climate change have drastically altered agriculture with no possible return. The film remains human and affectionate as the lens finds tenderness in aging bodies, without nostalgia but with certainty; and as the protagonist's stoicity always, somehow, finds meaning in moments of crisis." Gerlach reminds one of the beauty of both biodiversity, life, and the beauty of the humble potato.

Jury rapport:
“In both substance and form, Master of Light is a gift. The earnest and gifted painter George Anthony Morton embeds viewers in his world as he struggles to render his mother — both on the canvas and in his psyche. Boesten disabuses us of static tropes about America’s merciless drug war and about contemporary art. With astonishing intimacy, the film’s visuals build an artful bridge between two- and three-dimensional realms that are deeply rooted and utterly transcendent. Put this painting of film in a museum, next to a Rembrandt and a Morton.”

Since December 2015, Suzanne Raes and her crew (Jean Counet, Alex Booy, Wiro Felix and Victor Horstink) have followed the preparations of the dutch swimmers for the Olympic Games in Rio. Together with 2000 other film crews, they will follow the main characters during the biggest sport festival in the world.

Everything physically and mentally has been done to get the swimmers ready for a top presentation. Now the moment has come for all the hard work to become medals. That will not be easy as the competition is super strong and not all the swimmers are in top shape. It is very special to experience how strong the swimmers are and how small the difference is between winning and losing.
